The long famine in main-line steam operation (outside Scotland) caused by the hot weather and consequent fire risk appears to be ending. LSWR RailTours have confirmed that the The Severn Valley Explorer behind 5029 Nunney Castle on Sat 31 August will definitely run. (Provisional timings). The Cumbrian Mountain Express southbound behind 60007 on the 13th was the only other service to run in August.

1450 is due to undergo a loaded test run for main-line certification
on the Great Central line later in the summer. It is then expected to
operate shuttle services over the Southall-Brentford branch later in
the year.

60532 Blue Peter was due to be recertified for main line running
later in the year, following completion of repairs. However there is now
some doubt whether it will return to main-line operation.

6024 King Edward I is nearing the end of an overhaul at a
private site in Oxfordshire. It is due to be recertificated for
main line duties in September prior to its test run on 21 September.
On return to the main line, it's height will be reduced by nearly 5
inches to 13ft 1in to give it a wider route availability, although
it will still be barred from some routes due to the width over the
cylinders. It will also be fitted with air brakes (like 35028 and
34027), and a new ashpan watering system to reduce the lineside fire
risk.
A new water tank vehicle is being built on a redundant bogie container
flat with bodywork disguised to look like a BR Mark 1 coach. This will
provide a 240 mile range without the need to stop for water.

30777 Sir Lamiel was withdrawn from main line service with
boiler problems in June, and will miss all four of
the main line tours it was scheduled to operate prior to expiry
of its seven year boiler certificate on 16 October 1996. Its 27 July
booking will be taken over by no 828, while the remaining services on
11 August and 28 September will be hauled by 34027. Sir Lamiel is
expected to operate on the Great Central Railway for at least the
next 12 months.

34027 Tawe Valley is currently under repair at Didcot,
following its failure on 9 April with hot axle boxes. It is unlikely
to take up any further main-line duties until July. The Bert Hooker
Memorial trains scheduled for 11 May have been postponed to October.

46203 Princess Margaret Rose was withdrawn from main line
service prior its scheduled run on 13 April. 60009 will substitute
on some duties in April and May.

70000 Britannia was temporarily withdrawn from main line
service following its run on 23 March. It underwent a boiler re-tube at
Didcot. 60009 substituted on some booked duties. Britannia returned
to service on the Ipswich-Bury St Edmunds shuttles in June.

34027 Tawe Valley's loaded test run in January and the
subsequent Bristol-Swansea tour were both cancelled at short notice
following confusion over certification of the new air-brake system.
The loaded test will now take place on the East Somerset Railway,
while the Swansea trip has been rescheduled for 6 April.

30053 was unexpectedly withdrawn from main-line service on 22
January for major boiler repairs. Its scheduled main-line trips in April
have been cancelled.

34027 Tawe Valley completed a major overhaul at Grosmont
on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Dec 95, and was moved by road
to Cranmore on the East Somerset Railway on 6 January. The loaded
test train for main line certification is scheduled for 25 January.
34027 has now been fitted with air brakes, and is due to share operation
of the VSOE air braked Pullman train with 35028 Clan Line this season.

The LSWR Severn Valley Explorer ran as scheduled on 30 August, with 5029 Nunney Castle running early to Hereford. However a damaged firebox brick arch necessitated the addition of a Class 37 diesel pilot from Hereford to Kidderminster, which was reached only a few minutes behind schedule. The Severn Valley based LMS Mogul 2968 completed a successful test run to Gloucester also on 30 August, and is now expected to move to Carmarthen for the 14 September Midamd Welshman service to Shrewsbury.
